Qatar to open telecoms sector

Qatar is preparing to open up its telecommunications sector, currently monopolised by state operator Q-tel, AFP reported. Jordan promotes its national ICT industry

As part of Jordan's delegation participating at Gitex, the largest ICT trade show in the Middle East, a press conference was held at DICEC yesterday September 9th. The conference was attended by His Excellency Basim Al Roussan, the Jordanian Minister of Information and Communications Technology, Sabri Tabbaa, CEO of the Information Technology Association of Jordan (Int@j) and representatives of 10 Jordanian companies participating at Gitex under the Int@j umbrella.
The Jordanian minister reiterated that the Ministry of Information and Communications Technology will continue to help Jordan to emerge as a preferred outsourcing destination across the region. In 2005 and in line with His Majesty's directives, Jordan established a dedicated call center initiative to facilitate the development of this industry and align the investment environment with competitors.?
He added, ¡°Jordan offers all the right ingredients for a successful and vibrant outsourcing industry, such as our capable workforce at competitive cost as well as the country¡¯s robust technology infrastructure¡±. He also added that ¡°this can only be achieved through an effective public-private partnership that leverages each sector¡¯s strengths and areas of influence to ensure economic sustainability."
Jordan has taken great strides towards achieving its ICT National Strategy objectives. The MoICT has lately announced an initiative which provides each university student with a subsidized laptop in order to reach 50% internet penetration, and aims at increasing both revenue and direct employment of the sector.?
Sabri Tabbaa, Intaj's CEO commented, "Intaj works closely with the MOICT to achieve the objectives of the ICT National strategy 2007-2011. We are working diligently on implementing a Research and Development (R&D) fund that will be supported by deducting a tax from telecommunication companies to support startups and incubated projects."
The Information Technology Association of Jordan is an ICT industry-support association that embraces Jordan's ICT businesses, with a mission to promote their advancement on a local and international level, and enhance their capacity and performance; it has supported 10 Jordanian companies¡¯ participation at Gitex this year.?

The Information Technology Association of Jordan received the Mark for Best Practice of the King Abdullah II Center for Excellence

The Information Technology Association of Jordan (int@j) received the Mark for Best Practice of the King Abdullah II Center, in October 2006, for Excellence last month for excelling in providing services to local ICT companies that encourage their active participation in developing the country's economy. The Certificate was presented to Mr. Mustafa Naserridine, Chairman of int@j, by His Royal Highness Prince Faisal Al Hussein during a ceremony that was held at the Grand Hyatt, Amman.
The King Abdullah II Award for Excellence is the highest level of quality recognition in Jordan. The Award aims at enhancing the competitiveness of Jordanian businesses by promoting quality awareness and performance excellence, and recognizing the successful achievements of Jordanian companies.

Jordanian Initiatives. High on the agenda were discussions

The discussions were held for the second consecutive year during GITEX Technology Week 2007 at the Dubai Internet City Community Zone. The Palestinian Information Technology
Association (PITA) in cooperation with the Palestinian
Enterprise Development (PED) project funded by the
United States Agency for International Development (USAID)
and implemented by Development Alternatives, Inc. (DAI),

PEDs apprenticeship program. 73 graduates will be
selected and placed in local ICT companies. Recent
